These Are the Top 5 Hair Color Trends Taking Over Instagram Right Now

BY Alyssa Montemurro

Just as certain haircuts come and go with the passing of time, so too do hair color trends. While in the middle of June, you might find yourself requesting bright blonde highlights from your go-to stylist, come September you’re likely looking for something a little darker, warmer, or perhaps, just a bit different. It’s a feeling that we can definitely relate to, especially as the first day of fall approaches, which is why we took some time away from our busy, shampoo-making schedules to scour the internet in search of the biggest hair color trends of the season (you know, so you didn’t have to). From chocolately browns to deep, fiery reds, scroll through the photos below for a look at the five gorgeous colors you’re bound to see everywhere come fall 2019. Bonus: they’re also the perfect references to show your colorist at your next appointment!

Caramel Mocha Brunette

As far a fall hair colors go, this one is pretty much the perfect shade. Rich, warm, and full of depth, this dark, chocolate brunette shade offers just the right amount of contrast without ever feeling too high-maintenance. At the salon, ask your colorist for a rich, espresso base and a warm caramel balayage with subtle highlights that accent and frame the face. The result will be as irresistible as the color’s name.

Mushroom Blonde

While its name might not sound all that appealing (we are talking about fungus here, after all), “mushroom blonde” is a surprisingly pretty and oh so trendy shade that shows no signs of waning in the months ahead. In fact, according to Pinterest, searches for the cool, subdued blonde hue were up 308% this summer, while more traditional platinum blonde colors fell by 26%. In other words, if you’re looking for a fresh, new flaxen shade, mushroom blonde is your answer. Its undulating touch of gray and darker, ashy tones make it the perfect in-between shade for blonds looking to dip their toes into the dark side, or for brunettes wanting to go a little lighter. When recreating it, be sure to ask your colorist for a combination of highlights and lowlights to give it that beautiful, multidimensional effect.

Auburn

If you’ve recently scrolled through any runway or red carpet photos, it will likely come as no surprise to learn that red is shaping up to be the biggest hair color trend of the season. And while there are many hues that fall under the “red” category, darker auburn shades are among one of the most in-demand it seems. With hints of chocolate, brown, copper, and caramel, it’s one of the most multifaceted (not to mention prettiest) takes on red hair that we’ve seen in a long time. The dark, almost brunette roots also help to keep the look low-maintenance, while the golden and auburn tones prevent the copper color from skewing too orange. Simply put, it’s stunning.

Honey Blonde

While honey blonde shades aren’t necessarily anything new, they do seem to be having a bit of a resurgence as of late, due likely in large part to their warm, fall-appropriate tones. Whether you opt for all-over color or just a few face-framing highlights, you really can’t go wrong with this universally-flattering shade. As is the case with any lighter hair color though, be wary of those dreaded brassy tones that like to pop up a week or two after leaving the salon. To combat them, we recommend reaching for a toning shampoo like our fully customizable purple shampoo. It uses deep violet pigments to counteract brassy undertones and keep your blonde or balayage color looking cool and vibrant, all the while giving you a boost of your other selected hair goals (think deep condition and color protection).

Ginger Peach

If auburn red feels a bit too dark and serious for you, consider ginger peach! The pretty and delightfully named hue is the perfect transitional color into fall as it consists of an array of warm ombré tones, starting with an almost-brown brunette base at the roots and more vibrant tangerine and copper-peach shades at the ends. While the darker roots will help make the growing out process a bit more low-maintenance than most, the unexpected depth of vivid color will all but guarantee you make an entrance wherever you go come fall.
