What is it though?
Dimethicone is a type of silicone, which are basically the best of the best conditioning sidekicks. Dimethicone in particular is known to be gentle and safe enough for the arguably most important area– the face.
An emollient, Dimethicone is best known for its softening, soothing qualities, and it’s ability to protect the moisture barrier (the first layer of defense on your skin). It doesn’t mix with sebum (natural skin oils) so it conditions while staying light on skin. You love to feel that.
So, it’s safe?
We would seriously nix it if it wasn’t. Have you seen our ‘no list’? Yes, the skin care industry has widely trusted dimethicone in all kinds of products– cleansers, serums, moisturizers. We’ve added them strategically into our moisturizers only, we’ll get into why in a second. And if you’ve heard rumors about dimethicone clogging pores– that’s been pretty much myth-busted.
Why were they added to custom moisturizers?
The qualities of dimethicone made most sense for our moisturizers as our main goal was to promote real-deal hydration. Our skin quiz recommends you one of three moisturizer types: gel, lotion, and cream. Each non-irritating and dermatologist tested, and each containing smooth, soothing dimethicone. Adding moisturizers as the third in our 3-step skin care regimen (after cleanser and serum) is crucial as it locks in nutrients and conditions.
What does the lab have to say about dimethicone?
We asked our in-house lab crew for their hot take. Here’s what Chiara and Neha, our trusted scientists, had to say:
“Dimethicones are gentle for skin. They form a barrier on the skin and prevent moisture loss.”
